GRAN CANARIA WALKING FESTIVAL 2024

24 October

Thursday 24 October 2024 / Route 1

Under the shelter of Doramas

We inaugurate the 2024 edition of the Gran Canaria Walking Festival by going into the midlands of the north of the island. On this route, we will join the municipalities of Valleseco and Moya, undoubtedly two of the greenest municipalities of Gran Canaria.

During the route, we will pass almost entirely through the ‘Parque Rural de Doramas’, a protected natural area where the importance of the laurel forests and their flora and fauna is highlighted.

At present, around 1% of the laurel forest that once existed is still preserved. As a curious fact, of all the islands of the archipelago (except for the rest of the eastern islands, which do not exist due to their altitude), Gran Canaria is the only one where the laurel forest was described in written text with the term ‘jungle’. This tells us how large and prominent it must have been.

With regard to the route itself, there will be around 12.5km of alternating uphill and downhill, being the stage of the festival in which the difference between the accumulated positive and negative gradients will be the most even.

Our steps will take us to the village of Fontanales, one of the places on the island where, without a doubt, the trade winds and the fog have an influence throughout the year. So much so that both Valleseco and Moya are two of the Gran Canarian municipalities where several facilities have been installed in their mountains, as it is a sustainable way of obtaining natural resources in an efficient way.

Once we have passed Fontanales, we will continue through the Doramas Rural Park until we reach the ‘Casa Rural Natura Canaria’, where we can put an end to the inaugural stage and recover energy for the rest of the days.

Information to bear in mind

On this route in particular, it is advisable to wear waterproof clothing, as we will be travelling through the northern part of the island's midlands, where the Laurisilva is predominant and with the constant presence of the trade winds.

Therefore, although it is always advisable to carry clothing and equipment that adapts to all types of weather due to our island idiosyncrasy, on this route it is especially important as a way of preventing any unforeseen eventuality.

Finally, as on all the routes, it is compulsory to bring water, at least 2 litres, sun protection, a cap or hat, and to be alert to the weather conditions forecast, so as to have waterproof clothing if necessary. Recommended: walking sticks.

Accompanied minors from 16 years of age can participate, it is important to take into account the duration of the routes.

It is also important to remember the commitment to follow the indications and recommendations of the guides at all times.

Once the route has finished, participants must walk to the pick-up point for the return bus. This involves a descent of about 400 metres to the pick-up point.

Valsendero – Fontanales – Parque Rural de Doramas – Casa Rural Naturacanaria

Toponym of one of the hamlets belonging to the municipality of Valleseco, located in the basin of the Barranco de la Virgen.

Place name of one of the highest districts of the municipality of Moya, situated at almost 100m above sea level. Both its old name ‘Fontanal’ and the current one, correspond to the definition given by the Spanish language to the place where springs abound or to the very humid area with several fontanales, circumstances that concur, given the large number of wells and galleries existing in the district, some active and others abandoned, which gave rise to the toponym, finding here all the water catchment systems.

Protected Natural Area that encompasses territories of the municipalities of Arucas, Firgas, Moya, Teror and Valleseco. It is one of the most beautiful and ecologically valuable protected natural area on the island.

This farmhouse is located in the Rural Park of Doramas, on a 29.000 m² plot of land. It is decorated with every comfort and offers marvellous views of the cultivated areas and the mountains from the outside. In addition, it is surrounded by several royal paths ideal for hiking.

24 / OCTOBER / ROUTE 1

Under the shelter of Doramas

We inaugurate the 2024 edition of the Gran Canaria Walking Festival by going into the midlands of the north of the island. On this route, we will join the municipalities of Valleseco and Moya, undoubtedly two of the greenest municipalities of Gran Canaria.

25 / OCTOBER / ROUTE 2

The Peak of the Navigators

We begin this route very close to the highest point of the island's geography, but this is not the peak to which we refer with the name of this stage. What we have called the ‘summit of the navigators’ is another point that we will pass along our route.

26 / OCTOBER / ROUTE 3

Discovering the Aldea coastline

This route runs in its entirety through one of the municipalities with the greatest identity of the Gran Canarian island relief, and which, without doubt throughout its history, its idiosyncrasy has allowed it to preserve a good harmony with nature, thus contributing to the convergence between the conservation of the natural and cultural heritage, with social and economic development, linked mainly to the primary sector.

27 / OCTOBER / ROUTE 4

Road To the Top

We will end this edition of the Gran Canaria Walking Festival in the unique municipality of Tejeda. Situated in the central summit of the island, this village has been listed as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain.

The price of each route includes: transport, picnic, guides, insurance, snack or tasting lunch and gifts.
