The greatness of the pines of Gran Canaria will be revealed as we walk and the trees will witness our unforgettable experience as we set foot on their lands.
We will take the road that goes up and right, which is our actual starting point. Later on, there will be two deviations, and we shall continue towards “Hoya del Gamonal”.
On this route, we will walk through the highest municipality of Gran Canaria: “La Vega de San Mateo”. The wonderful natural and scenic value of this place as well as its rural nature will make us fall in love with its beautiful paths. “La Vega de San Mateo” will provide you with picture-postcard places and an incredible variety of landscapes of Gran Canaria, from luxuriant and damp ravines to the most spectacular views of the island heights.
On this route, we will see up to 8 municipalities all at once, thanks to the breath-taking panoramic views this path is blessed with. What’s more, at some point along the way, we will see the “Pico del Saucillo”, a peak which separates the towns of “Valsequillo” and “San Mateo”.
At the end of the route, we will enter the district of “La Lechuza”, the area with the biggest population we will come across on this route, and where the “Hotel Rural Las Calas” is located. This hotel is home to peace and quiet, luxuriant vegetation and endemic species.
A gastronomic tasting session of local products will then take place in this welcoming accommodation filled with history and tradition.
Cruz De Los Llanos – San Mateo – La Lechuza – Hotel rural Las Calas
The current surface area of the town used to be what approximately corresponds to the aboriginal place of Tinamar, which, according to several historians, may come from a Berber word meaning "bushy beards" or "lush forest". The name makes sense, as this place was covered by a large laurel forest at the time.
After the conquest, it was delimited in the area called La Vega, a jurisdiction that encompassed what are now the municipalities of San Mateo and Santa Brígida, and that subsequently became known as “Vega de Arriba”, which would correspond to San Mateo.
