ROCKS BATHED BY SALT

GRAN CANARIA WALKING FESTIVAL 2023

20 October

Friday 20 October / Route 2

ROCKS BATHED BY SALT

You will have great fun following this refreshing 10 km coastal route, which runs from near Sardina pier to Puerto de Las Nieves. After a day full of discoveries, the perfect end awaits you, with a swim in the Atlantic Ocean in the fishing village’s calm natural pools.

Venture to the northwest of the island today and you will be dazzled by the coastal beauty that embraces this route between two ports. A 10 km awaits you, dotted with climbs and descents adding up to a total of +480 m and -506 m. It will test your endurance every time you cross a ravine. Although the total ascents and descents do not amount to a great deal, this route is moderately tough.

Along the way, wind turbines will greet us from afar, combining with the archaeological attractions of Cuesta Botija. You can stop for a picnic next to a blowhole, hypnotised by the ebb and flow of the sea. You will also visit the Morisca cave, the road to Puntagorda and the detour to Farallón.

Finally, you will reach the welcoming Las Salinas natural pools, a haven of peace to end your day feeling the sea breeze.

Information to bear in mind

Although the route runs along the coast, the cumulative ascent and descent reaches almost 900 metres. It is, therefore, a continuous up and down along the entire route.

The technical difficulty is medium as the terrain is essentially made up of small slippery stones that require our full attention, as well as suitable footwear for these activities.

We will make a stop to recharge our batteries and have lunch on the 6th km of the route, in a picturesque spot in front of the Barranco del Juncal ravine.

Finally, as on all routes, you must carry at least 2 litres of water, sun protection and a hat, as well as being alert to the forecast weather conditions so you can have waterproof clothing available if necessary.

We also recommend that you bring a swimming costume, a change of dry clothes and a small towel for those who wish to enjoy a swim in the natural pools at the end of this route.

Accompanied minors from 16 years of age can participate, it is important to take into account the duration of the routes. In addition, we remind you of your commitment to follow the indications and recommendations of the guides at all times.

Sardina – Agaete

Impressive cliff that rises majestically from the sea, creating a stunning visual spectacle and providing a unique habitat for a variety of seabirds. The view from the top is fantastic, with panoramic views of the surrounding coastline and the vast ocean.

This important archaeological site offers an insight into Gran Canaria's pre-Hispanic past. Visitors can explore the ruins of aboriginal settlements and learn about the culture and customs of the island's first inhabitants.

It is one of the most unique natural phenomena on the north coast. This coastal rock formation, with an opening that communicates with the sea, creates a ‘bufadero’ or marine geyser, throwing seawater high into the air when the waves break against the rock.

This small port is a quiet and picturesque place, with traditional fishing boats. It is an ideal place to enjoy a quiet stroll and appreciate the uniqueness of the Canarian coast.

The closest thing to a medieval fortress, although filled with pleasant ocean water. Three excellent natural pools protected from the open sea simulate a castle by their unique concrete pylons like battlements, which further lessen the onslaught of the waves. These pools, connected by volcanic tubes, have everything you need to enjoy relaxing baths with great views of the cliffs of the northwest coast.

This charming seaport, known for its white houses and small church, is one of the most emblematic points of interest in Gran Canaria. From here, you can visit the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, enjoy views of the sea and the Tamadaba massif, one of the most imposing rock formations on the island.
