GRAN CANARIA WALKING FESTIVAL 2024

27 October

Sunday 27th October 2024 / Route 4

Road To the Top

We will end this edition of the Gran Canaria Walking Festival in the unique municipality of Tejeda. Situated in the central summit of the island, this village has been listed as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain.

We will start our walk from the village centre, passing by some of its most characteristic decorative elements, such as the famous ‘cesta de Tejeda’ (Tejeda basket). From here we will begin our ascent, practically uninterrupted during the whole route. Once we reach the area of the ‘degollada de la cumbre’ we can begin to appreciate the impressive ‘caldera de Tejeda’, which shows us the legacy of the volcanic activity that has moulded the island's relief for millions of years. The most important rocks of the central summit of Gran Canaria (Roque Bentayga, Roque del Fraile, Roque de la Rana, Roque Nublo), vestiges of the island's second eruptive cycle, can be seen.

If the weather is favourable, you will also be able to enjoy the view of Tenerife, with the Teide as the protagonist, providing a film-like backdrop to the setting offered by this route.

At the end of the route, our steps will guide us through the plains of El Garañón and Llanos de la Pez, places with a lot of history about the central summit of Gran Canaria, about the Canary Island pines (pinus canariensis) and their traditional uses. We will also be able to see how the toponymy of the surrounding area refers to these traditional uses, nowadays forgotten, such as the ‘degollada de los hornos’ or the ‘presa de los hornos’, among others.

The end of the festival will take place in El Garañón, where we will be able to enjoy a good closing atmosphere in the shade of the pine trees.

24 / OCTOBER / ROUTE 1

Under the shelter of Doramas

We inaugurate the 2024 edition of the Gran Canaria Walking Festival by going into the midlands of the north of the island. On this route, we will join the municipalities of Valleseco and Moya, undoubtedly two of the greenest municipalities of Gran Canaria.

25 / OCTOBER / ROUTE 2

The Peak of the Navigators

We begin this route very close to the highest point of the island's geography, but this is not the peak to which we refer with the name of this stage. What we have called the ‘summit of the navigators’ is another point that we will pass along our route.

26 / OCTOBER / ROUTE 3

Discovering the Aldea coastline

This route runs in its entirety through one of the municipalities with the greatest identity of the Gran Canarian island relief, and which, without doubt throughout its history, its idiosyncrasy has allowed it to preserve a good harmony with nature, thus contributing to the convergence between the conservation of the natural and cultural heritage, with social and economic development, linked mainly to the primary sector.
