This route runs in its entirety through one of the municipalities with the greatest identity of the Gran Canarian island relief, and which, without doubt throughout its history, its idiosyncrasy has allowed it to preserve a good harmony with nature, thus contributing to the convergence between the conservation of the natural and cultural heritage, with social and economic development, linked mainly to the primary sector.
During several editions of the Gran Canaria Walking Festival we have been able to see the so-called ‘tail of the dragon’ in the distance, either from the municipality of Agaete, or from the higher areas of the municipality of La Aldea itself. However, in this edition we will have the possibility to walk along this mountain.
To begin the stage, a small circular route will take place on the ‘tail of the dragon’ itself, where we will be able to appreciate (weather permitting) the beauty of the municipality and the west coast of the island, where the steep mountains merge with the traces of the old access road to the municipality.
After enjoying the panoramic views that this magical place offers us, we will head towards the famous Charco, previously passing by the beach of La Aldea. Here we will have the opportunity to take a refreshing dip. In this iconic place (the Charco), one of the most famous and multitudinous festivals of the Canary Islands takes place.
After a short dip in the sea, we will end this day of hiking on the beach of La Aldea, enjoying the good company and the sound of the ocean.
There is the possibility of swimming halfway through the route, so you will need a swimming costume, towel and a change of clothes.
Finally, as in all the routes, it is compulsory to bring water, at least 2 litres, sun protection, hat, as well as to be alert to the weather conditions, in order to have waterproof clothes in case of being necessary. Recommended: walking sticks.
Accompanied minors from 16 years of age can participate, it is important to take into account the duration of the routes.
In addition, we remind you of your commitment to follow the indications and recommendations of the guides at all times.
Reserva de la Biosfera – Charco de La Aldea – Hotel La Aldea Suites
Biosphere Reserves are areas of unique characteristics composed of terrestrial, marine, coastal or combined ecosystems in which solutions are promoted to reconcile the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use by humans. These areas, internationally recognised under UNESCO's MAB Programme, are ‘sites supporting science for sustainability’.
A coastal lagoon that extends almost half a kilometre inland, it is popularly known as ‘marciega’, produced by the flooding and flooding of water from the sea, in combination with the contributions of the periodic runoff from the ravine produced as a result of rainfall.
The popular festivals that are held today promote the history of the place and its ethnographic and cultural heritage, as in pre-Hispanic times, fishing was used in this place by means of the ‘embarbascado’ technique. This technique consisted of pouring latex from certain plants, such as the cardón or tabaiba, which produced a sedative effect on the fish, making it easier to catch them. This fishing technique continued to be used in different areas of Gran Canaria, at least until the first half of the 20th century.
Located in the municipality of La Aldea de San Nicolás and situated in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas of Gran Canaria, this is a small paradise between the mountains and the sea. A hotel located between Protected Natural Parks (Roque Nublo, Tamadaba, Inagua and Güi-Güi) and only 5 minutes away from untouched and unspoilt beaches. The ideal accommodation to enjoy the hiking trails of La Aldea de San Nicolás and the tranquillity that characterises this municipality.
We inaugurate the 2024 edition of the Gran Canaria Walking Festival by going into the midlands of the north of the island. On this route, we will join the municipalities of Valleseco and Moya, undoubtedly two of the greenest municipalities of Gran Canaria.
We begin this route very close to the highest point of the island's geography, but this is not the peak to which we refer with the name of this stage. What we have called the ‘summit of the navigators’ is another point that we will pass along our route.

We will end this edition of the Gran Canaria Walking Festival in the unique municipality of Tejeda. Situated in the central summit of the island, this village has been listed as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain.
