Under the shade of the "Palmeral de Arteara" we start our route by this second itinerary, which ends the first stage of the Way of St. James of Gran Canaria. A small ascent that will take us from this small village to the village of Fataga, along a path that offers views of the imposing rock massif of Amurga and the crags of Tirajana. We cross the heart of the village, taking a small stretch of paved road leading us through this charming hamlet that has preserved its traditional architecture. Once we pass the enclave of Fataga, a steep ascent takes us to the viewpoint, and from there we continue until we reach the village of Tunte, which, decorated to mark the Jacobean Year, will welcome us on this second route of the Way of St. James. The Church of Tunte is one of the two Jacobean temples in Gran Canaria where St. James the Apostle is venerated, the other being the church of Gáldar.
Accompanied minors from 16 years of age can participate, it is important to take into account the duration of the routes.
This route goes by the Church of Tunte, which dates back to the 16th century. This church houses the image of St. James the apostle whose name was chosen for the route that currently crosses the island of Gran Canaria: The Way of St. James of Gran Canaria.
Located in the interior of the "barranco de Fataga", the small hamlet stands out breaking with the architectural line of the southern part of the island. The village is made up of small single- family houses, and the colour white is its insignia, since all the rooms here have austere white walls.
The contrast of this whiteness with the rest of the environment, arid in some areas and green in its palm groves, makes Fataga a unique place on the island.
Home to the largest municipality of Gran Canaria, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, and located at the base of the Tirajana caldera, this small town has several areas of cultural interest that make it a must-see. Characterised by its narrow and steep streets, Tunte stands out for its abrupt relief forming a singular landscape.
It has several areas of cultural interest, such as its church, dating from the 16th century, where the image of St. James rests, marking the origin of the path that today crosses the island, as well as other locations such as the cemetery, which is considered a historical monument.
As we leave the south side of the island behind us, we notice a clear change in the vegetation as we lay eyes on a landscape moving from the Arteara palm grove to the majesty of the Canary Island pines, small trees and shrubs.
The Faro de Maspalomas will guide our way to the largest necropolis in Gran Canaria, bringing us closer to the shadow of the majestic palm grove of Arteara.
We leave the valley of the thousand palm trees behind us to discover the charming village of Tunte.
We continue our way through pine forests along the traditional Ruta de La Plata, or La Plata Route, to the Cruz de Tejeda.
From the Cruz de Tejeda we enter the pine forest of the Caldera de los Pinos de Gáldar, meeting a landscape of green and volcanic contrasts, until we reach various villages that herald our arrival in Gáldar, the final stage of the Way of St. James.
